Understanding Poker
Poker is a popular casino card game that requires you to have a perfect combination of luck, skill and strategy.
It's very difficult to pin down the exact origin of poker. Some people opine that poker was developed by the Chinese people several centuries ago as a variation of dominoes. Some others are of the view that poker originated in Europe. The fact that tarot decks have long been used in Europe for fortune telling adds weight to this claim. In spite of the unclear origin of the game, poker is hugely popular among casino players across the world, including the US. In the United States, the first poker games were played in the late 1800s southern city of New Orleans.
Poker Basics
The majority of poker games involve the usage of a standard 52-card deck of playing cards. Poker rules have been simply passed down through experience and tradition and there's no international regulating organization for this game. Most poker games involve the trading of money for chips before the game commences. Poker players use these chips while playing the game. After the game ends, the players can trade their chips for money.
Following is a list of terms frequently used while playing poker:
Ante: It's a bet that all the players place before a hand is dealt. In short, it's a cost the players have to pay for playing in that particular hand.
Blind: It is a bet that a player sitting on the left side of the dealer places before being dealt a hand.
Bluff: Bluffing is when the players try to deceive their opponents by betting aggressively in spite of having a weak hand. Players bluff to make the other players fold.
Bug: It's a kind of joker used as a wild card in some games.
Buy-in: It's the amount required to participate in a poker game.
Call: When the players call, they put into the pot the amount required to match the previous bets that were made in that particular betting round.
Check: If the players check, it implies they don't bet and pass the opportunity to bet to the player sitting at their left.
Fold: If players think that their cards aren’t good enough to win, they drop out of the hand. This is termed as 'fold'.
Hand: It's a combination of cards that is compared to the combination of cards possessed by other players to determine the winner.
Raise: It means increasing the bet amount for the current betting round.
For any poker enthusiast, it's necessary to be aware of these terms to increase the winning prospects.
